Samsung Galaxy S5 Smartphone
The wait is finally over for the Samsung Galaxy S5. The highly anticipated smartphone was officially unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and it’s everything we hoped it would be. It’s got a gorgeous 5.1-inch 1080p display, a powerful quad-core processor, an improved 16-megapixel camera, and a host of other new features and enhancements. And like its predecessor, the Galaxy S4, it’s one of the most feature-rich smartphones on the market.
But does that make it the best smartphone you can buy? We put the Galaxy S5 through its paces to find out.
Design
The first thing you’ll notice about the Galaxy S5 is that it looks a lot like the Galaxy S4. In fact, if you put the two side by side, it’s hard to tell them apart. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the Galaxy S4 was already a good-looking phone. But with other manufacturers like HTC and LG releasing phones with more premium designs, Samsung’s decision to stick with the same plastic construction feels a bit dated.
The Galaxy S5 is available in four colors: black, white, blue, and gold. Our review unit was the black model, which has a dark gunmetal gray trim around the edges. The back of the phone is still made of plastic, but it has a soft-touch finish that makes it more comfortable to hold. And unlike the glossy plastic back of the Galaxy S4, the Galaxy S5’s back has a matte finish that’s less prone to fingerprints and smudges.
The front of the phone is dominated by the 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display. Above the display is the earpiece, front-facing camera, and sensor array that includes an infrared sensor for use with Samsung’s Smart Scroll and Smart Pause features (more on those later). Below the display are three physical buttons for Home, Back, and Menu. The buttons are backlit and have tactile feedback, making them easy to find and use in low-light conditions.
On the left side of the phone is the volume rocker while the right side houses the power/lock button and SIM card tray. The top of the phone has a 3.5mm headphone jack and noise-canceling microphone while the bottom has another microphone, microUSB port for charging and data transfer, and speaker grille. The back of the phone is where you’ll find the 16-megapixel camera with LED flash as well as the heart rate sensor just below it.
The Galaxy S5 measures 2.85 inches wide by 5.59 inches tall and 0.32 inch thick. It weighs 5.11 ounces—slightly heavier than both the HTC One (M8) (5 ounces) and iPhone 5s (4.9 ounces). Despite its large size, I found the Galaxy S5 relatively easy to use with one hand thanks to its slim bezels and curved edges. I also like that Samsung moved the power button from the top of the phone to within easy reach of your thumb on the right side of the phone.
Display
The Galaxy S5 has a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels (432 ppi). This is identical to last year’s Galaxy S4 in terms of both size and resolution; however, Samsung says it’s using an improved panel with higher brightness levels and better contrast ratios for more accurate colors. And indeed, images and videos looked bright and sharp on the Galaxy S5’s display with vibrant colors that popped off the screen without looking oversaturated or artificial. Viewing angles were also excellent; I could tilt the phone at extreme angles without losing any picture quality or brightness levels.

Samsung UN55JU7500 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV
The Samsung UN55JU7500 is a high-end 4K LED TV that offers excellent picture quality and a very good feature set. It’s one of the few TVs in its price range that can handle both HDR10 and Dolby Vision content, and it has a great selection of apps and services. Its only real downside is its lack of a true local dimming feature, which hurts its black level performance compared to some of its competitors.
Design
The Samsung UN55JU7500 is a stylish TV with a slim profile and a sleek metal stand. The bezels are extremely thin, measuring just 0.4 inches (1 cm) on the top and sides and 0.8 inches (2 cm) on the bottom. The inputs are all located on the back of the TV, facing downwards. This makes them somewhat difficult to reach, but it does keep the cables hidden from view.
The remote control that comes with the UN55JU7500 is fairly basic, but it gets the job done. The buttons are well-sized and have a good amount of travel, making them easy to use. The remote also has a built-in microphone for voice search, which works quite well.
Picture Quality
The Samsung UN55JU7500 offers excellent picture quality. It’s able to display a wide range of colors accurately, and it has good peak brightness levels. It also supports high dynamic range content, including both HDR10 and Dolby Vision. This means that you’ll be able to enjoy the improved picture quality that these new formats have to offer.
The UN55JU7500 has decent black levels for an LED TV, but it lacks a true local dimming feature. This means that its performance in dark rooms isn’t as good as it could be. The good news is that its excellent brightness levels help offset this shortcoming to some extent.
Motion handling is also very good on the UN55JU7500. It has a native refresh rate of 120 Hz, which combined with its backlight scanning technology results in very little motion blur. The TV can also interpolate lower frame rate content up to 120 frames per second, which helps improve the smoothness of fast-moving objects.
The Samsung UN55JU7500 uses a VA-type LCD panel, which means that it has good viewing angles. This is helpful if you have a lot of people over for movie night or if you like to sit off to the side when you’re watching TV.
