Netgear’s Nighthawk X6S Smart WiFi Router (R8000P) is a tri-band router that offers speeds up to 3.2Gbps (800Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 1,733Mbps on each of the two 5GHz bands). It’s an update to the Nighthawk X6 R8000, which was one of the first routers on the market to offer 802.11ad Wi-Fi. The X6S isn’t quite as fast as some of the latest mesh systems from Netgear’s competitors, but it does offer multi-user MIMO ( MU-MIMO) data streaming and a wealth of management features. It’s also one of the more expensive tri-band routers we’ve tested, but if you need MU-MIMO and want a user-friendly interface, it’s worth considering.
Design and Features
The X6S looks similar to the original X6, with six antennas (three internal, three external) and a large footprint that measures 12 by 8.8 by 2.4 inches (HWD). The glossy black router has blue LEDs on the front panel that indicate power, Internet, 2.4GHz, 5GHz #1, and 5GHz #2 activity. There are also activity lights for each of the eight LAN ports (four Gigabit Ethernet and four 10G SFP+), the WAN port, and the USB 3.0 port. The rear panel has recessed Reset and WPS buttons, as well as a Kensington security slot.
The six external antennas are removable and can be replaced with aftermarket antennas if you want to boost range or performance. Underneath the antennas is a plastic cover that conceals four adjustable external antennas (two for each 5GHz radio) and two internal antennas for the 2.4GHz radio. The bottom of the router has four rubber feet and two vents for airflow.
Internally, the X6S uses a Broadcom BCM47094 1GHz dual-core processor with 256MB of flash memory and 512MB of RAM. It supports beamforming for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz radios and can operate in either router or access point mode. When operating in router mode, you can connect it to an existing gateway or modem using the WAN port or one of the LAN ports; in access point mode, you connect it to an existing network using one of the LAN ports (the WAN port is disabled). You can also use it as a standalone MU-MIMO access point by connecting it to a wired network using one of its LAN ports and disabling DHCP server functionality in the network settings menu.
Like most high-end routers, the X6S uses multiple SSIDs—a separate network name for each band—to keep your 2.4GHz devices from slowing down your 5GHz devices, and vice versa. By default, both SSIDs are enabled, but you can disable one or both if you don’t want to use all three radio bands.
I/O Ports and Management Settings
Around back are eight Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports (four with PoE passthrough), a 10Gbps SFP+ WAN port, a USB 3.0 port,and two reset buttons (one recessed). The USB port supports storage devices formatted for FAT32 or NTFS so you can share files across your local network; it can also be used with an external 3G/4G cellular modem for failover if your primary Internet connection goes down.
