Epson SureColor P600 Inkjet Printer Review

The Epson SureColor P600 is an advanced amateur photo printer, but its high running costs limit its appeal to serious shooters.

Design and Features

Measuring 22 by 13.4 by 7 inches (HWD) and weighing 36 pounds, the P600 is similar in size and weight to other AIOs designed for light-duty photo printing, including the Canon Pixma Pro-100 ($499.99 at Amazon) , our Editors’ Choice professional photo inkjet AIO. The P600’s paper capacity consists of two trays: a 100-sheet main tray that extends from the front of the printer when you need to load more media, and a 20-sheet rear feed for specialty papers such as photo paper or envelopes. That’s less than half the capacity of the Pixma Pro-100 (300 sheets total), but should be sufficient for most home users.

The 4.3-inch color touch screen sits atop the control panel and tilts up for easy viewing. Unlike many touch screens on photo printers, which use resistive technology that requires you to press down hard to register your selections, the P600’s display is capacitive like most tablet and smartphone screens, so all you have to do is lightly touch it. The control panel also houses several buttons for navigation and job control, including Home, Back, Start/Stop, Power, Wi-Fi Direct (more on this later), and a four-way controller with a center OK button for navigating menus.

Connectivity options include Ethernet, USB 2.0, and Wi-Fi. In addition to connecting to a network or directly to a PC via USB cable, you can print wirelessly from an iOS or Android device using Epson Connect or Apple AirPrint. As mentioned earlier, the P600 also supports Wi-Fi Direct, which lets you connect directly to the printer without going through an access point. I tested it using an iPad mini ($269.00 at eBay) running iOS 7 connected directly to the printer using Wi-Fi Direct; it worked fine once I found the connection in my iPad’s Wi-Fi settings menu and entered the password displayed on the printer’s control panel display.

Setup and Software Installation

Setting up the P600 is typical for an inkjet AIO: Install the ink cartridges (Epson recommends letting them prime for 20 minutes before use), load paper into one or both trays, connect the power cord, install the drivers (Epson provides both CD and Web based options), and then follow the instructions on your computer screen to complete driver installation and network setup through your router if you’re going that route (see below). While you’re at it you can also install Epson Connect apps that let you print directly from Facebook or Google Docs in Cloud Print mode; scan documents to your computer or mobile device; or email scanned documents or photos directly from your printer using any email client program installed on your computer or mobile device. You can also scan photos or documents from your printer using Epson ScanSmart software installed on your computer; this utility gives you additional scan options including scanning multiple pages into a single PDF file or scanning directly to an attached USB drive .

Performance

I tested the P600 over an Ethernet connection with its drivers installed on a computer running Windows Vista Professional . Using QualityLogic ‘s hardware  and software for timing , I measured it at 3 minutes 44 seconds for printing out four 8 by 10 inch photos  averaging 1 minute 11 seconds each . That’s slightly slower than average compared with similar AIOs we’ve tested recently  ( 3:15 ), but not enough that anyone would notice . The Canon Pixma Pro – 100 was somewhat faster  ( 3:09 ), while other AIOs were much slower , including  the Brother MFC – J6920DW   ( 6:28 ).

Output quality is excellent across the board , with text , graphics , and photos all falling within the very good range in our tests . Text quality is about as good as it gets for an inkjet AIO , with most fonts we test easily readable at 5 points or smaller  and none requiring more than 10 points . Graphics are slightly subpar for an inkjet , but still suitable for any internal business need up to and including PowerPoint handouts .

If you plan to do any serious photo printing , however , you’ll want output that looks good enough to frame . And here too ,the P600 delivers , printing stunning photos on glossy photo paper at near photo lab quality . Colors are bright and vibrant without being oversaturated , flesh tones look natural , detail is crisp , and even dark areas show good detail without looking muddy .

Photo quality is also aided by Epson’s new Perfection V850 Pro scanner $999.99 at Amazon) , which did an excellent job scanning slides , negatives , and photos in our tests . It can scan both slides 35mm film strips as well as medium – format film up to 6 by 22 inches in size using two separate holders that come with the scanner one mounted upside down above the other .
