ISO sensitivity ranges from 100-25,600 natively, and can be expanded down to ISO 50 or up to ISO 51,200. Video is equally impressive, with the NX1 able to record 4K (3840 x 2160) footage at up to 24p/30p using HEVC (H.265) compression, or up to 60p/60i using H.264 compression. 1080p video can be recorded at up to 120p/60p for slow motion playback, or up to 60p/60i using H.264 compression. The NX1 also supports UHDTV (ultra high definition television) output over HDMI, and can record 4K footage directly to an external SSD drive.
All of that performance comes at a price though, both in terms of size and weight, as well as cost. The NX1 is a large and heavy camera, especially when compared to other mirrorless cameras on the market. It’s also not a cheap camera, with a street price of around $1600 for the body only. But if you’re looking for a serious mirrorless camera that can go toe-to-toe with the best DSLRs on the market, the Samsung NX1 is definitely worth a closer look.
Design and Build Quality
The first thing you’ll notice about the NX1 is its size; it’s big. Not quite as big as a full frame DSLR like the Nikon D810 or Canon EOS 5D Mark III, but still noticeably larger than other APS-C mirrorless cameras like the Sony Alpha 7/7R or Olympus OM-D E-M1. Part of that is due to the fact that it uses a DSLR-style body design, with an integrated handgrip and a large pentaprism hump on the top of the camera. This gives the NX1 a more traditional DSLR-like feel in the hand, which will be familiar to those coming from that world. But it also makes the camera somewhat front-heavy when used with smaller lenses, something to keep in mind if you’re planning on using longer or heavier lenses on the NX1.
The body itself is made mostly of magnesium alloy, with some plastic accents here and there. Overall build quality is excellent, and the camera feels very solid and well put together. The handgrip is nicely contoured and provides a good grip on the camera, even when wearing gloves. All of the buttons and controls are logically laid out and easy to reach with your fingers while shooting. The mode dial on the top of the camera has a nice positive click to it, making it easy to turn without accidentally moving it out of position. The only complaint I have in this department is that the shutter release button feels a bit too small for my liking; it’s not a huge issue, but something I noticed nonetheless.
The rear of the camera features a large 3″ AMOLED touchscreen display with 1 million dots of resolution. The display is bright and clear, and is visible even in direct sunlight. Touch operation works well, although I found myself using the physical buttons and controls more often than not while shooting. The main reason for this is that I found myself inadvertently activating touch operations while trying to hold the camera steady; things like changing the focus point or activating touch shutter just by resting my finger on the rear LCD while holding the camera steady for a shot. This isn’t really a big deal, but something worth mentioning nonetheless. Above the LCD is an electronic viewfinder (EVF) with 2,359k dots of resolution; again, this is bright and clear with good color reproduction. One thing I did notice though was that there was some noticeable aliasing artifacts around high contrast edges when viewed through the EVF; not a huge issue, but something worth mentioning nonetheless.
On the left side of the camera you’ll find all of the input/output ports, which are covered by two separate rubberized flaps. There’s a micro USB 3 port for data transfer and charging, a 3.5mm microphone jack, a 3.5mm headphone jack, an HDMI port (mini connector), and a hot shoe for attaching an external flash or other accessory. On the right side of the camera there’s just a single SD card slot; unfortunately Samsung decided to go with their own proprietary NVMe format for this particular slot rather than standard SD cards or even UHS-II SD cards. This means that unless you happen to have one of Samsung’s own NVMe memory cards handy (which are currently only available in 32GB and 128GB sizes), you’ll be stuck using slower standard SD cards in this slot; not ideal if you’re planning on shooting 4K video or bursts of high resolution images.
The bottom of the camera features a metal tripod mount that is nicely aligned with the center of the lens mount; this helps keep things nice and stable when mounted on a tripod or monopod. There’s also an integrated battery compartment door that houses one of Samsung’s new BP1900 batteries; more on that in a bit.
