Beats Pill+ Portable Speaker

Beats by Dr. Dre – Beats Pill Portable Speaker – White

The Good The Beats Pill portable speaker delivers strong audio performance in a small, stylish design with a built-in bass port. It can play quite loud for its size and has good Bluetooth range. A free companion app lets you control the speaker’s settings and access additional features.

The Bad The Beats Pill doesn’t sound as good as larger, more expensive portable Bluetooth speakers, such as the Bose SoundLink Mini and the Jawbone Jambox Big Jambox. Battery life could be better.

The Bottom Line The Beats Pill is a good-looking, compact portable Bluetooth speaker that delivers powerful audio performance for its size — but not everyone will appreciate its bass-heavy sound signature.

Design

The Beats Pill measures 2.8 by 7.5 by 2 inches (HWD) and weighs 1.1 pounds. It’s available in all white or all black models; our review unit was white. The cylindrical aluminum casing has a rubberized base that helps keep it stable on flat surfaces. The top panel has a glossy plastic finish with a circular grille covering most of the surface. Behind the grille are four drivers: two tweeters and two woofers. There’s also an LED indicator light that glows red when the speaker is charging and blue when it’s turned on and paired with a device.

On the back panel, there’s a power button, a 3.5mm auxiliary input, and a USB port for charging mobile devices. The right side panel houses all the controls: Volume up/down buttons, a track navigation rocker switch, a multifunction button for controlling playback and making phone calls, and an LED indicator light that shows battery life (when pressed) or Bluetooth status (when turned on).

Performance

The Beats Pill delivers strong audio performance for its size, but it won’t blow you away if you’re used to listening to larger portable Bluetooth speakers such as the Jawbone Jambox Big Jambox or the Bose SoundLink Mini. On tracks with intense sub-bass content, like The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” at maximum volume there was no distortion, but at any level below that the Pill started to distort slightly at around 80 percent volume on both iOS and Android devices we tested it with–still quite loud, but not as clean sounding as we would like it to be. At moderate volumes, the bass response was still quite strong without being overbearing–the low end definitely takes center stage here–but there was some audible distortion on tracks like this one at around 75 percent volume on both platforms we tested it with (your mileage may vary depending on your source material).

On Bill Callahan’s “Drover,” his baritone vocals sounded rich through the Pill; however, they were pushed back in the mix just enough so that you miss some of their inherent warmth and richness compared with what you get from larger speakers like the Jambox Big Jambox or even something like Logitech’s UE Mobile Boombox–the highs also take a bit of a backseat to the lows on this track through the Pill. This tendency towards bass-heavy sound was also evident in our classical music tests: Orchestral tracks sounded full and rich through the Pill, but again lacked some of their inherent airiness and detail compared with what you get from larger speakers like the SoundLink Mini or Boombox (on Brahms’ “Symphony No 4 in E Minor,” for example).

On Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild,” the kick drum loop gets plenty of high-mid presence keeping its sharp attack intact through all levels of volume on both iOS and Android devices–there was no distortion at maximum volume when we tested it with an iPhone 5s (your results will likely vary depending on your source device). The sub-bass synth hits that punctuate this track are delivered with gusto through the Pill–at moderate volumes they don’t distort too badly until you get past about 80 percent volume on an iPhone 5s (again, your results will likely vary), but at max volume they do sound distorted on both iOS and Android devices we tested them with (a result of pushing those tiny drivers pretty hard). At moderate volumes though, they add serious thump to the mix without overwhelming everything else too much; however, they still manage to push things towards bass-heavy territory compared with what you get from other portable Bluetooth speakers we’ve tested recently such as Logitech’s UE Mobile Boombox or even Jawbone’s own Jambox Big Jambox which offer more balanced sound signatures across genres than what you get here with Beats’ little pill speaker.

For phone calls placed through an iPhone 5s using Skype, callers said our voice sounded clear without any noticeable distortion; however, they did report hearing faint echoes of their own voices during calls which might be distracting for longer conversations. On our end though, call quality was strong overall; we could hear callers loud and clear without any issues related to dropouts or static interference even when we took them outside to test range–the latter of which is rated at 30 feet according to Beats by Dre although your experience will likely vary depending on your environment since obstacles can interfere with Bluetooth signal strength (walls are typically pretty good at this). We were able to walk beyond 30 feet without experiencing any dropouts while streaming music from Pandora indoors; however once we stepped outside we started hearing occasional dropouts beyond about 20 feet which isn’t unusual for portable Bluetooth speakers in this price range (we’ve found that most have similar range outdoors).
