I have been using the original Antares Variable Polarizing Filter (VPF) for a number of years and have been very happy with it. I purchased the new model, the Antares 2″ VPF recently. Here are my thoughts.
The Good:
– The filter is still very well made. The housing is all metal with a knurled aluminum ring to attach it to the eyepiece. The glass is high quality.
– The new design eliminates the need for a separate spacer ring. This was always a pain to keep track of with the old model.
– The new filter has fine threads that allow it to be screwed directly into 2″ eyepieces without an adapter. This is a great feature!
– The filter can now be rotated while attached to the eyepiece, which makes it much easier to use. With the old model, you had to remove the filter and rotate it, then screw it back in. This was a real pain, especially if you had a heavy eyepiece in place.
– The new filter is said to have improved light transmission. I can’t speak to this, but it does seem slightly brighter than the old one.
The Bad:
– The main downside of the new design is that it is no longer possible to stack other filters on top of the VPF. This was always a great feature of the old model, and I will miss it. For example, if I wanted to use both a nebula filter and the VPF, I could screw the nebula filter into the VPF. Now I’ll have to use two separate adapters, which is a pain.
– The new filter also requires a larger clear aperture in your eyepiece than the old one did. This means that if you have any 2″ eyepieces with a small field stop (such as some Plossls), they will vignette with the new VPF in place. This was not an issue with the old model.
Overall, I’m happy with the new Antares 2″ VPF. It’s a high quality product that represents an improvement over the old model in many ways. However, the loss of the ability to stack filters is a significant downside.
